Course Overview

A Health and Safety Officer (HSO) is a person who has been formally appointed by an organization to ensure that the firm operates without incidents or injuries with regard to health and safety (H&S). He or she is a crucial person who not only encourages H&S culture inside the organization but also instructs, mentors, and acts as a resource for the planning and operational employees.

In the H&S department, he or she is in charge of minimizing and getting rid of both minor and big occurrences, along with his or her seniors and juniors.  Minor accidents could involve worker injuries that require first aid and medical attention, but big ones might involve fire, explosion, poisonous or deadly releases, the collapse of buildings or scaffolding, or other structures that cause serious injuries or fatalities.

HSO must have a variety of personal qualities, technical know-how, and abilities to carry out their duties.  Small businesses are expected to have someone in management who is knowledgeable with H&S regulatory obligations, employee expectations, and welfare measures on the H&S front, whereas big and medium businesses are obliged to legally hire HSOs.

Lessons Learned

The most important lesson that I have learned from being a Health and Safety Officer is that safety must always take precedence in all decisions. Anytime a decision is made, the safety of the workers and visitors must be taken into consideration. Additionally, a good Health and Safety Officer should take an active role in promoting safety in the workplace by setting examples, providing training, and inspiring safety advocates. Ultimately, if the safety of the workplace is not a priority, it can lead to serious injuries, illness, accidents, and even fatalities.
