Course Overview
In major projects, problems are not a possibility; they are a certainty. The difference between a successful project and a failed one is not the absence of problems, but the ability to proactively manage them. This program is built for the professionals who stand at the center of this challenge.
This is not a theoretical legal course or a simple scheduling workshop. It is a practical, high-level guide to the four pillars of project success: Contract, Planning, Strategy, and Claims. We will show you how these four elements are deeply connected. You will learn how the strategic decisions made before a contract is even signed directly impact the claims you might face two years later. You will see how a project plan is not just a schedule, but a critical legal and commercial tool.
This course gives you a complete framework to move from a reactive, firefighting mode to a proactive, strategic one. You will learn to build a project strategy, embed it in a fair contract, execute it with a dynamic plan, and manage the inevitable claims with a new level of professional skill and confidence.
Introduction
Welcome to the leadership guide for complex projects. Why do so many large-scale projects end in disputes, cost overruns, and broken relationships? The answer is often simple: the project’s strategy, its plan, and its contract were not speaking the same language.
This program is built on a powerful, field-tested idea: effective claims management is not what you do when things go wrong. It is the result of what you did right from day one. A good claim is simply a well-documented story of a commercial entitlement. A good project is one that anticipates these stories before they happen.
This course is your playbook for creating that project. We will give you the principles (the “why”) and the practices (the “how”) to master the full lifecycle. You will learn to use the project plan as your primary tool for managing contractual obligations. You will learn to identify potential claims early, document them flawlessly, and resolve them commercially before they escalate into open disputes. We are here to help you become a true project leader who protects the bottom line by mastering the details.
Learning Objectives
After you complete this program, you will be able to:
- Develop an Integrated Project Strategy: You will be able to align your commercial strategy, your delivery model, and your contract structure from the very beginning.
- Master the Contract as a Project Tool: You will learn to read, interpret, and (most importantly) use the contract to manage daily operations, not just file it away.
- Use Planning as Your First Line of Defense: You will be able to develop and maintain a dynamic project schedule that serves as your primary tool for managing change, proving entitlement, and demonstrating impact.
- Implement a Proactive Claims Management System: You will learn to build a system for identifying, documenting, and managing claims as a routine business process, not an emergency.
- Analyze Delay and Disruption: You will gain the skills to use accepted industry methods to analyze schedule delays and quantify the financial impact of disruption.
- Prepare and Present Compelling Claims: You will know how to build a claim “from the ground up,” creating a clear, well-supported, and persuasive narrative that leads to a successful resolution.
- Negotiate and Resolve Disputes Efficiently: You will gain a framework for managing negotiations, mediation, and other dispute resolution methods to achieve the best commercial outcome, avoiding costly and slow legal battles.
- Build a “Lessons Learned” Culture: You will be able to use the data from claims and disputes to feed back into your planning and contracting, making every project smarter than the last.
Our Unique Training Methodology
We believe you learn this by doing, not just by listening. This program is built on a “Three-Pillar” approach that is practical, intensive, and focused on real-world application.
- Practical Toolkits and Frameworks: This is not a dry, academic course. For every principle, we provide a tool. You will get checklists for contract reviews, templates for claim notices, and process maps for managing change. We give you the “how,” not just the “what.”
- Forensic Case Study Workshops: We will pull apart real, anonymized projects that went right… and some that went terribly wrong. As a group, we will act as project consultants, tracing the path from a single clause in a contract to a multi-million dollar claim.
- The “Live Dispute” Simulation: The program culminates in a high-stakes simulation. Your team will be given a real-world scenario—a project in distress—and you will have to use the contract, the project plan, and your claim data to negotiate a resolution against another team with its own set of facts.
Pre-course assessment
To ensure our time together is as valuable as possible, we ask you to complete two brief items before the program begins:
- The Project Controls Check-In: A brief, 15-minute online quiz. This is not a test. It just gives us a clear baseline of the group’s shared knowledge on key terms from planning, scheduling, and contract law.
- The “Problem” Memo: In a single, confidential page, please describe a real challenge you are facing (or have faced) related to a contract, a delay, or a claim. This primes you to apply what you learn and gives you a concrete problem to solve with your new skills.

Lessons Learned
The single most important lesson from this program is that project control is dispute avoidance. You will leave this program with a clear understanding that a well-planned strategy, a fair contract, and a meticulously managed project plan are not just good management—they are your most powerful claims prevention tools.
You will have the confidence to manage any project, not by hoping problems will not happen, but by having a professional system to manage them when they do. You will be able to protect your company’s interests, preserve its relationships, and deliver projects on time and on budget.
