Course Overview
Is work life balance possible? Sure, it is.
Is it easy? Depends!
Today the topic of work life balance is gaining importance more than ever before. Some experts say that the “work life balance” should be replaced with “harmony” because work and life need to co-exist and when two things co-exist they might not always be in perfect balance. Depending on our circumstances one might be more than the others. So what we should strive for is to have harmony so that both exist seamlessly rather than making it an equation that needs to be balanced. Whatever we choose to call it, one this is for sure that this topic is important.
There are numerous reasons for this. The astounding rise of the middle class with increased ambitions, opening of the global economy with easy access to better education has made the professional landscape extremely competitive. Individuals are aspiring for more at a young age and organizations are striving to “do more with less”. As if this was not enough, the global pandemic has disrupted our lives, for better or for worse, only time will tell.
Majority of the workforce globally was forced to work from home during and after the peak of the pandemic. The work from home came as a boon to many and a curse for some. On one hand organizations were threatened by their employees moonlighting while on the other hand working parents got to spend more time with their children and even got to witness important milestones in their child’s growing up journey, which otherwise would have been missed.
The work from home has given rise to a rather unfortunate phenomena called “flexibility stigma” which is true for working women more than working males. “Flexibility stigma” is a biased opinion that employees who work from home are less productive than employees who work from office. As a result, employees who work from home are working longer hours leading to unsustainable habits and an imbalance in their work life.
Many studies have also show that relationships have been strained, especially marital relationships where underlying issues and conflicts became harder to overlook.
In view of all this competitiveness and complexities is work life balance possible? Sure, it is.
Is it easy? This depends on how we navigate and respond to situations in our work and personal life.
